Carolina Adams

On the first of April, 1911, 23-year-old Mrs. Anna Murphy died from an abortion perpetrated by a midwife (or possibly obstetrician) named Carolina Adams. Adams was held by the Coroner’s Jury but the case never went to trial.

Adams was listed in the 1899 Chicago city directory as a midwife practicing at 143 Canalport Avenue. According to the 1910 Federal census, she was around 63 years old at the time of Anna’s abortion.
