On September 29, 1917, 27-year-old Annie DeGroote died in her Chicago home from a criminal abortion perpetrated by Dr. Emma J. Warren. Warren, as well as Annie’s husband Herman, were arrested for her death. Warren was indicted on October 15, 1917, but the case never went to trial.
On April 30, 1923, 29-year-old homemaker Emma Herod died in her home from an abortion performed there that day. Dr. Emma J. Warren was arrested for the death. On July 15, Warren was indicted for felony murder in Emma Herod’s death
Warren was also arrested for performing the abortion that left Mrs. Philip Machier of 1301 Pratt Avenue seriously ill. (“Dr. Emma Warren Held,” Chicago Tribune, September 22, 1916).
