Homemaker Fern Loretta Howe died at Brownsville Hospital, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, at 3:00 a.m. on January 13, 1927, just 18 days after her 27th birthday.
She had undergone a criminal abortion that caused sepsis, which triggered fatal heart problems.
Fern, divorced from her second husband, left her three-year-old son motherless. Little Harry Hasson had been born to Fern’s first husband, William. Prior to her death, Fern had entrusted Harry to the care of her sister, Margaret McCoy, and mother, Barbara Walker.
