Janice Easterbrook, age 21, of Arcadia, Nebraska, died in mid-May of 1958, from an abortion performed in Kansas City, Missouri, by 51-year-old osteopath Dr. Harry Werbin. Werbin was convicted of manslaughter by abortion and sentenced to two years.
Werbin was an unlikely abortionist — he had been the physician for the 1952 and 1956 Israeli track team, and the US Pan American track team in 1955. He clearly, though, had links in the abortion underworld, since Janice’s parents had been able to locate him, and he called on his friend, abortionist Richard Mucie, to help him deal with Janice’s injuries.
