On June 26, 1899, 55-year-old Mrs. Helen Gibbs of Amboy, Illinois, was found guilty of murder by abortion for the death of Mrs. Ida Bates. Gibbs reportedly perpetrated the abortion in her Galva, Illinois home in November of 1898. The trial took a week, and the jury deliberated for four days and three nights. Gibbs was sentenced to 14 year in prison.
