On July 1, 1896, Hannah Carlson died at Chicago’s Emergency Hospital at about 5 p.m. Her brother, A. O. Carlson, swore out a complaint against Lucy Hagenow and Ida Von Schultz. Both women were charged with murder.

Von Schultz worked so closely with Hagenow that she was at times identified not as another practitioner but as an alias.
