SUMMARY: Keisha Marie Atkins, age 24, died on February 4, 2017 of sepsis and blood clots four days into a late term abortion performed by Dr. Curtis Boyd at his Southwest Women’s Options in Albuquerque, NM.
Keisha Marie Atkins, age 23, arrived at Dr. Curtis Boyd’s Southwest Women’s Options in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on January 31, 2017 to undergo a 4-day abortion procedure. She was likely at least six months into her pregnancy.
On February 3, she returned to the facility to complete the abortion, which was going according to plan. She was showing the signs of being in labor that are expected at the final stage of a late abortion.
However, before expelling her baby Keisha began to have trouble breathing. At 12:04 p.m., staff at the facility called an ambulance, but then somebody else called to cancel the ambulance It is unclear as of this writing how Keisha got from Southwest Women’s Options to University of New Mexico Hospital.
Once she was at the hospital, her condition deteriorated rapidly. Staff there immediately began to use instruments to dismember and remove Keisha’s unborn baby, but during the procedure she went into cardiac arrest. She was declared dead shortly after midnight on the morning of February 4.
The medical examiner tried to blame Keisha’s death on the pregnancy rather than the abortion, even though she showed clear signs of sepsis which is likely what triggered the disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC), a clotting disorder, which caused the clot that moved into her lungs and ended her life.
I am aware of one other abortion patient to have died under Curtis Boyd’s care: Vanessa Preston, who also developed DIC during an abortion.
