Lizzie Paulson1900s, 30s, chicago, illinois, illegaluntrainedOn November 24, 1907, homemaker Lizzie Paulson, age 38, died at County Hospital in Chicago from an abortion performed that day. John and Minnie Nelson were arrested and held without bail. John Nelson was sentenced to Joliet for his role in Lizzie’s death. John Nelson’s profession is given as “outside labor force” and “abortion provider”, so likely he was a professional lay abortionist.

With so many John Nelsons living in Chicago at the time, several with wives named Minnie, I’ve been unable to positively identify this John Nelson or discover his usual occupation.

Lizzie’s abortion was unusual in that it was not performed by a physician.
Note, please, that with general public health issues such as doctors not using proper aseptic techniques, lack of access to blood transfusions and antibiotics, and overall poor health to begin with, there was likely little difference between the performance of a legal abortion and illegal practice, and the aftercare for either type of abortion was probably equally unlikely to do the woman much, if any, good.
