A coroner’s inquest concluded that Mary Elizabeth Geary, age 17, died on November 1, 1870 of puerperal convulsions, “which death might have been prevented by proper medical treatment.”
Mary had reportedly gone to the Chatham Street, New York abortion practice of Dr. Evans on a Saturday afternoon, immediately after getting off work at a hat and feather store. She’d been in perfect health that dayt. At 5:00 or 6:00, the abortion was perpetrated, and within an hour Mary was dead.
“The notorious” Dr. Evans was held over for grand jury. “In his statement to the Coroner he declared that he never attempted to perpetrate an abortion upon any woman, though he had had hundreds of requests.
