Mary SimkusabortionistsfemaleOn February 27, 1920, 28-year-old Sophie Krawczyk died in her Chicago home from an abortion perpetrated by Mary Simkus, whose profession is listed only as “abortion provider,” though according to the U.S. Census she was a midwife.

Simkus was indicted for Sophie’s death, but the case never went to trial.

Simkus, a Russian immigrant, was the 40-year-old widow of John Simkus, and raising a teenage daughter at the time of Sophie’s death. She was born in Russia about 1880 and had immigrated to the United States in 1908.
