On February 23, 1928, 26-year-old waitress Martha S. Watson (nee Diederich) , a Wisconsin native, died in Chicago from an illegal abortion. The person or persons responsible were never identified or prosecuted.
Martha was the wife of Jacob Watson and the daughter of Otto and Elizabeth (Reineck) Diedrich.
Keep in mind that things that things we take for granted, like antibiotics and blood banks, were still in the future. For more about abortion in this era, see Abortion in the 1920s.
